CELEBRATING A SACRED LEGACY

Cathy Riley collected 120 songs from Sumter County African American seniors in 1987-1988, and this concert is a commemoration of those powerful songs. To honor this legacy, you are cordially invited to celebrate with wonderful choirs and soloists, sharing these heartfelt spirituals. Some spirituals long unsung in church song traditions, will be showcased.

Spirituals:
The old-time spirituals rose out of the African-American need for deliverance from their enslaved circumstances through songs of hope and spiritual transformation. From the message songs, to the Christ- inspired praise and sorrow songs and the later powerful gospel outpourings, God was the focus and loving Him above all was the goal!
